Foods Your Child Should Avoid in the First Year

Jill Castle, MS, RDN • March 11, 2025 • 5 min read

You should avoid honey or corn syrup due to the potential contamination with botulism spores. You shouldn’t use cow’s milk; however, baked products with milk and yogurt are fine at 10 months. If cow’s milk is given before 9 months, there is an increased risk for iron deficiency and intestinal bleeding. Raw fish—like sushi— should not be part of your baby’s diet. Make sure any fish offered is thoroughly cooked.
