How do I Know if my Baby is Getting Enough to Eat?

Kristie Rivers, MD, FAAP, Board Certified Pediatrician • March 11, 2025 • 5 min read

Your child will be weighed at birth, at discharge from the hospital, 2-3 days later at your first check-up and then as often as your doctor feels necessary.

A quick way to visually see what your child is eating on a day-to-day basis is to keep a notebook with the time and length (for breastfeeding moms) or volume (for formula-feeding moms) of each feed as well as the number of wet and soiled diapers each day.

As an estimate, babies will have wet diapers that correspond to the day of life if they are eating well. So on day 1, expect at least one wet diaper, day 2, expect at least two, and so on until they reach eight or more wet diapers per day.
