When can my Child eat Fish?

Jill Castle, MS, RDN • January 2, 2019 • 5 min read

Fish is one of the top eight food allergens, so if you have a close family relative with a fish allergy, speak with your doctor or allergist before including it in your child’s diet. Otherwise, at a year, you can try tuna fish salad, cooked salmon, codfish, or other thoroughly cooked fish. Stay away from raw fish, such as sushi, because young children do not have a fully developed immune system until they are 5-6 years old.
