Heartburn During Pregnancy
Though morning sickness seems to get all the hype, many women also experience heartburn during the early and later stages of pregnancy. Heartburn is caused by the hormone progesterone, which relaxes the uterine muscles to fit your growing baby – and also relaxes the valve between the esophagus and the stomach. This allows acid from your stomach to travel back up your esophagus, causing a burning sensation.
To lessen the effects of heartburn, try sleeping on your left side. You can also take the daily recommended dosage of a mild anti-acid such as Rennies or Gaviscon if your physician has no objections.
