Itchy Nipples When Breastfeeding

By Nabta Team

Itchy nipples are a common complaint of women who are new to breastfeeding. This could be a transitional symptom as the woman’s body is getting used to breastfeeding. A newborn's suck can be surprisingly powerful, causing cracks in the nipples of new moms, especially those who have a history of skin problems. It is important to keep the nipple as clean as possible in such a situation to avoid any further infection. Using an all-purpose nipple ointment which has anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties can help with the itching. Moreover, breastfeeding women have to make sure they give enough time for the nipples to dry after each breastfeeding session.
