How Much Fiber Does my Baby Need?

Your baby’s digestive system is still maturing and isn’t really ready for hefty doses of fiber in the first 6 months. When you initiate solid food introduction at 6 months of age, your baby will receive small amounts of fiber from fortified cereals and pureed fruits and vegetables. As you advance through increasing texture and food variety in the second half of the year, fiber will naturally make its way into your baby’s diet. For example, at around 10 months, your baby can eat diced ripe banana, ripe pears, and cooked carrots and squash, all of which are good sources of fiber. At 12 months, your baby can eat mashed beans, whole wheat breads, and cereals.
