If you are pregnant and have noticed a bump near your anus that gets worse after straining, it is very likely to be a hemorrhoid. Hemorrhoids are varicose (or dilated) veins that originate from the anus. If they appear during pregnancy, it is often in the third trimester. This is commonly seen in women who are constipated. When else might you strain and bear down repeatedly during pregnancy? You guessed it—in labor. Women who have hemorrhoids may notice they acutely worsen right after delivery, especially if they pushed for a while.
You should be sure to mention them to your doctor or midwife just to be sure, but rest assured that this is often what you are feeling.
