When are Headaches in Pregnancy a Problem?

Headaches are very common in pregnancy. They are a nuisance but often harmless. However, if you are experiencing any of the symptoms described above you should be seen to make sure nothing more concerning is going on. Having vision changes, weakness or difficulty speaking, or experiencing the worst headache of your life can be signs of a blood clot or bleeding in the brain. These issues require immediate attention.

Preeclampsia also needs to be ruled out if your headache isn’t getting better with rest and Tylenol. Other symptoms of preeclampsia include having floaters in your vision, pain on your right side where your liver is, nausea/vomiting, or a feeling that something is just not right. Be sure to check in with your doctor or midwife to make sure everything is OK.
