Blocked Milk Ducts and Breast Pain
Milk ducts are tiny channels in a woman’s breast which transport milk within the breast. About 1 in 20 women deal with a blocked milk duct at some point during the first year of breastfeeding. A blocked duct is problematic as it can lead to infection of the breast – a very painful condition. Some ways you can recognize a blocked duct is when you have pain in a certain area in one breast which is also swollen, decreased milk production from that breast, and an occasional fever.
Applying a heat pad to the region, massaging the area above the block (avoid pinching the blocked area), and changing the baby’s position to ensure that the baby is able to latch to the nipple completely are some of the lifestyle changes that could help with a blocked milk duct.
