Will Learning More Than one Language Harm my Child’s Speech and Language?
Although achieving proficiency in more than one language takes time, dual or multiple language learners should reach language milestones around the same time as single language learners (e.g. first words by age one, putting two words together by age two).
Sometimes dual language learners will initially go through a silent period, but this should disappear after a few months. They may also switch between two languages when forming sentences or using vocabulary as they gain proficiency in both.
There are many benefits to bilingualism, so if you speak more than one language, don’t be afraid of passing it on to your children. What a great gift you will be giving them!
