At What age can my Toddler use a Pillow?

Sara Connolly, MD, FAAP, Board Certified Pediatrician • November 21, 2024 • 5 min read

Most toddlers begin showing interest in a pillow at around 18 to 24 months and can safely use a toddler pillow in their bed or crib.

You can find these little pillows at most major retailers. Make sure they come with an appropriately sized pillowcase. Some pillows are even washable, which is great for eliminating germs and messes.

If you cannot find a toddler pillow you like, look for a travel pillow, since they are similarly sized. If your toddler shows no interest in a pillow, then it’s perfectly fine to sleep without one for as long as they’d like. Under one year of age, pillows should not be in the baby’s sleep space.
