Can I use a Household Spoon to Give Medications to my Baby?

Today’s medications, both over-the-counter and prescription medications, come with a metric measuring device, such as a syringe or a cup. On the side of the syringe (or cup) are lines and numbers indicating how many milliliters (mL) it contains. Follow the instructions as written on the medication, and give the corresponding mL dose using the device that came with the medication.

Store medications come with their dosing device in order to have it when you need it. Using a household spoon is a poor substitute as it can lead to either too much or too little medication being given. If you have questions about proper medication dosing, it’s always a reasonable idea to call your pediatrician to speak to a nurse about dosing.
