I’m Worried my Partner won’t be a Good Support Person in Labor — What Should I Do?

Some women find that their partners are very squeamish and because of this worry that they won’t be able to provide adequate labor support. Still others don’t have a partner, or their partner may not agree with the birth plan a woman wants to use.

If you are worried your partner might not be too helpful when the big day comes, there are some things you can try. Taking a birthing class together might help your partner feel more comfortable with how labor works and feel more prepared. A good book might also do the trick. If you’re still not convinced, line up someone else to be your main support person. This can be a family member, close friend, or a doula that you hire to provide professional labor support. Preparation is key so that when the time comes, you don’t feel completely alone and are confident in those you have in your hospital room with you!
