What are PUFAs?

PUFAs have unique health effects, such as lowering bad cholesterol and your risk of heart disease and stroke. PUFAs also contain the important omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, essential (meaning you have to eat them because your body doesn’t make them) to many functions in the body, such as brain and vision development. For these reasons, include moderate amounts of PUFAs in your family’s diet by offering foods such as soybean, corn, and sunflower oil; fatty fish such as salmon, herring, and trout; and other PUFA-rich foods, like walnuts, sunflower seeds, tofu, and soybeans.
