Will my Doctor Support my Birth Plan?
Having a birth plan can help some women feel more mentally prepared for labor. However, one of the biggest mistakes you can make is not discussing it with your OB/GYN or midwife until you show up to the hospital in active labor. This is because you might find that things that are really important to you— laboring in a tub, for example—may not be available at your hospital. To avoid this, prepare your plan weeks ahead of time and bring it to a prenatal visit to discuss. At this time, you can see if your doctor agrees with everything or if any modifications might need to be made (or going so far as switching obstetric providers). Also, be sure to bring a few copies when you go to the hospital to ensure they don’t get misplaced!
