When is our Newborn’s First Doctor’s Visit?

Most pediatricians want to see a baby who is exclusively breastfeeding a few days after discharge from the hospital. The purpose of this visit is to check the newborn’s weight, assess for jaundice, discuss the infant’s voiding and stooling patterns, and address any concerns that you may have as a new parent.

Of course, your pediatrician may want to see your baby sooner if there are any concerns. Babies who are exclusively formula-fed can usually wait until two weeks of age to be seen, unless you have concerns that you would like to address prior to that point.
