My Newborn has “Diarrhea” up to 10 Times a day. What Should I Do?

Newborns poop a lot! Some babies will have a stool with each feed, which in the earliest days can mean 12 stools a day.

Most new parents find out early on that there are times when a dirty diaper is changed just prior to a feed, only to have to change another one by the end of the feed. As long as the stools are very soft to almost liquid in consistency, this can be normal.

Newborn stools can appear anywhere from yellow to brown to green, often with tiny “seeds” mixed into it. Breastfed newborns tend to have more frequent and more liquid stools than formula fed babies, but this is not always the case.

Stools should never be full of mucus or blood at any time. If so, be sure to visit the pediatrician right away.
