Are Asthma Medications Safe in Pregnancy?

Asthma affects 4-8 percent of pregnant women, and about 30 percent of these women will actually see their asthma worsen in pregnancy. We know that untreated asthma can lead to a host of problems: preterm labor, preeclampsia, growth restriction in their babies, need for C-section, maternal illness, and even death. Therefore, if medications have been prescribed to control your asthma, you should definitely take them. There are safe ones in each category, and it is much more preferable to have well-controlled asthma on a medication than frequent asthma flares and exacerbations because you were afraid to use the medications prescribed.
