Should I Wait to Give my Child a Fever Reducer Until After we see the Pediatrician?
The doctor does not need to see the fever on their thermometer to make any decisions, and we want your child to be comfortable. In fact, bringing down a high fever often gives the doctor a clearer picture of what is going on. The child may be more comfortable and therefore easier to examine closely. Conversely, if the child remains very ill-appearing or very uncomfortable after medication, it clues your doctor into the fact that something is wrong.
Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are both excellent fever reducers. Ibuprofen is not appropriate in infants younger than six months. Both are dosed according to weight, so it’s a good idea to check the dose with their doctor at each and every visit as it changes quickly, especially in the first year.
