Does my Child Need a Specialist for Strabismus?

Strabismus means that the eyes are not moving together, making the child appear cross-eyed or misaligned. When eyes do not work together, the brain will eventually turn one of the eyes off to avoid double vision. This can result in permanent vision loss in the weaker eye.

It is important to see an ophthalmologist if you or your pediatrician suspects strabismus. Treatment is most effective when done early. Glasses and or patching of the eyes are the mainstays of treatment.
