It has long been known that a woman should take folic acid from the moment she discovers she is pregnant in order to prevent certain birth defects and help the development of the baby’s brainstem, but folic acid is now known to be an important supplement for male fertility as well. It was found that men had a higher rate of chromosomal abnormalities in their sperm when their diet was low in folic acid. Coenzyme Q10 has also been found to increase sperm count and sperm motility. Natural sources of folic acid ("folate") include citrus fruits, brown bread and spinach.
