How Does Prolactin Affect Your Body ?
By Nabta Team
Prolactin is a hormone that helps a woman’s body secrete milk during breastfeeding as well developing milk ducts during pregnancy. While the levels of this hormone rise in pregnancy and stay elevated throughout breastfeeding, sometimes non-pregnant women may also have a high level of prolactin.
Some common causes of elevated prolactin are prolactin-producing tumours, certain medications, or issues with the thyroid hormone axis. Symptoms of elevated prolactin include the production of breast milk when you are not pregnant or nursing, a dry vagina, and irregular menstrual cycles.
